UMBERTO BOCCIONI (1882-1916)
Genius and memory
“Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916). Genio e memoria” is the title of the exhibition in Milan beginning 23 March 2016. The event is curated by the Gabinetto dei Disegni della Soprintendenza del Castello Sforzesco, promoted by the City of Milan – Department of Culture, produced and organized by the Castello Sforzesco, Museo del Novecento and Palazzo Reale along with Electa publishers. The exhibition presents highlights of the artistic path and international stance of the undisputed protagonist of the Futurist movement, with special focus on the activity he carried out in Milan.
On display are approximately 280 works including drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings, photographs, publications, magazines, and papers. Some of Boccioni’s masterpieces from the Museo del Novecento are set in dialogue with the priceless heritage belonging to the City of Milan, which boasts the most important collection of Boccioni artwork the world over both in quantity and quality. The Museo del Novecento’s exhibition halls thus welcomes a contemporary exhibit within the Permanent Collection of the Museum. The tour begins with an in-depth exploration of the ‘pre-Futurist’ season up to archival records until now never displayed. The Museo del Novecento will also host several parallel activities, including a cycle of encounters around the theme of Boccioni as an artist.
