The Museo del Novecento presents “Level 0”, ArtVerona’s initiative in collaboration with fourteen Italian contemporary art institutions that aims at promoting emerging artists who have distinguished themselves during the fair and are then chosen and presented by each museum.
This year they exhibit in the halls of the Museum: Lupo Borgonovo, chosen for the 2018 edition, and Silvia Giambrone for 2019.
Lupo Borgonovo, selected in 2018, is exhibiting until 31 January 2021 "Aplomb" a series of ten watercolour drawings, joined by an eleventh, which will become part of the museum’s collection.
The subject of the works is the evolution over time of a pair of asparagus portrayed in real life, from when they were fresh to when they ripened and aged. Each panel shows an episode of a hypothetical choreography, halfway between eroticism and irony, approaching a classic theme such as still life and trying to actualize it through references to artists such as Édouard Manet and Max Ernst.
The artist produces his drawings through a process of research and transformation of images from different fields: natural elements, everyday objects and art collections from the past, selecting them for their formal singularity. This enables him, through subsequent technical and compositional procedures, to make the subjects unrecognisable, giving them a new contextualization and symbolic meaning.
"Nobody’s room. Anzi, parla" (Nobody’s room. Actually, speak), is a project by Silvia Giambrone that develops partly in the museum’s video room, where video-documentations of performances made by the artist from 2008 to the present day are projected, and partly on the institution’s website, in a virtual and interactive exhibition hosted by the Google Arts & Culture platform and conceived as a work-in-progress.
The exhibition, curated by Carlotta Biffi, is part of “Level 0”, ArtVerona’s initiative in collaboration with fourteen Italian contemporary art institutions that aims at promoting emerging artists who have distinguished themselves during the fair and are then chosen and presented by each museum.
The work of Silvia Giambrone, selected in 2019, reflects on the gender-based power dynamics that permeate our society, and was conceived in the year that the Culture Council of the City of Milan dedicated to women’s creativity with the “I Talenti delle donne” (“The Talents of Women”) programme.
The project focuses on a choral dimension through the participation of the audience, which is invited to familiarise themselves with the performance Nobody’s room (2015)and to reflect on the multiple nuances of abuse. The web page, similar to a digital book to be browsed and discovered, is enriched over the duration of the project by the visitors’ vocal contents, thereby becoming a sort of “collective community archive” that finds its epilogue, turning into a sound work, on 25 November, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
