ANTONIO SCACCABAROZZI

The Museo del Novecento is proud to present a solo exhibition devoted to the work of Antonio Scaccabarozzi entitled ‘Progettare sconfinare’ (Creating the Rule: Going Beyond).

The show, organized with the support of the Archivio Antonio Scaccabarozzi, tells the story of the artist’s career from the 1960s to 2008 through a selection of works that masterfully embody the various phases of his tireless artistic experimentation.

From the 1960s to 2008, Antonio Scaccabarozzi (Merate, 1936 – Santa Maria Hoe’, 2008) engaged in his indefatigable investigation, while remaining perfectly aligned with the cultural context and artistic movements (not only Italian) of his day. His work was underpinned by constant and rigorous research into the meaning and potential of creating art, starting from an analysis of the components of visual expression, especially painting. And it was precisely through a study of space, line, colour, chiaroscuro, light, movement, and balance between the various elements making up a painting that Scaccabarozzi went as far as to literally pare down his work, freeing it from excessively expressive forms, thus achieving absolute essentiality.

His artistic career evolved through several phases. Initially, there were geometrically ordered systems, pivoting on the concepts of method, measurement, and replicability of processes: in other words, the artist began by setting the criteria by which the work would take shape, thus ensuring the development of the process; he then verified its outcome and analysed its impact. From the late 1970s, while adhering to his concept of a neutral form of art in the production phase and resorting to the sparing use of materials, Scaccabarozzi felt the need to relax the rules, to ‘go beyond’. This period was marked by his most radical exploration: more than ever, it was now clear that, beyond his constant verification of the rules of artistic expression, he was always willing to meet the challenge of the outside world. For Scaccabarozzi, painting was a way to reflect on our perception of reality and the relationship between the artwork and the spectator, as well as between art and external factors. This was, in other words, the fundamental role of art.
